If it melts in your mouth and not your hand – what melts first?! the color or the M?! And which color melts the fastest? But most of all – is it true you can catch the M before it melts away?
Finally, you can answer these questions once and for all with a tasty food activity for kids.
What you need:
- Bowl
- Water
- M&Ms
What you do:
- Fill a small bowl about an inch deep with water.
- Place one of each color of M&M into the bowl.
Watch carefully as the colors begin to melt. After a moment or two, the M should float off the surface of the M&M and rise to the surface of the water.
Can you catch an M on your finger?
Why it works:
The M is printed onto each M&M after the sugar based candy coating is dry. The white letters on M&Ms (and Skittles too!) are printed with an edible ink that does not dissolve in water. When the candy shell dissolves, the letter peels off and floats.
