DIY Finger Paint
Kids can paint themselves (or a paper) with homemade, slimy, gooey wonderful finger paint made with ingredients from your kitchen. Then pull out the hose to rinse off and you have a terrific summer afternoon. I don’t know if my boys had more fun painting or cleaning up this time!
Common Sense Warning: Because this recipe requires heating on a stove, be cautious while heating and test temperature before allowing children to finger paint.
What you need:
Cornstartch
Salt
Sugar
Water
Food coloring
What you do:
In a small pot, mix together:
¼ cup cornstarch
¼ tsp salt
1 ½ tbsp. sugar
1 cup cold water
Warm over low heat for about 15 minutes while stirring.
When the mixture thickens, remove from the stove and let cool.
Once clear mixture is cool, divide it into small cups.
Add food coloring to the cups to make the colors you would like.
Make several colors for lots of backyard fun! Now paint away on paper, bodies, or sidewalks. The paint is washable on most materials.
Why it works:
The cornstarch and sugar act as a thickener for the water and binds to the food coloring. When you add even more water to the mixture by rinsing, the paint thins and washes away.
