One of the challenges of learning to read is finding books that are interesting AND that are appropriate for developing readers. This unique class of books are called Hi/Lo books – High Interest, Low Reading level books.
After three reluctant readers, my ability to find Hi/Lo books is a skill I take pride in! If you have a reluctant reader too, or a child who is ready to tackle a short chapter book, try one of my favorites!
A Light in the Attic – by Shel Silverstein
Ameila Bedelia – by Peggy Parish
Catwings – by Ursula LeGuin
Henry and Mudge – by Cynthia Rylant
I Was a Third Grade Science Project – by Mary Jane Auch
Mr. Putter and Tabby – by Cynthia Rylant
The Chocolate Touch – by Patrick Catling
